North Point High School
Location: Waldorf, MD
Owner: Charles County Public Schools
Architect: SHW Group
North Point High School opened its doors in the Fall of 2005. This new state of the art high school combines the traditional academic environment with a technical learning center. This “high-tech hybrid” is equipped with a swimming pool, full beauty salon, auto shop, culinary learning facility, criminology program, daycare center, and ROTC program, providing students with authentic, hands-on approaches to learning. Considered the anchor building by school officials, the school sits on a one hundred (100) acre educational complex that will eventually include an entire campus with an elementary and middle school, community service complex, a library and two additional development sites.
This massive 311,248 SF multi-use high school facility was designed by The SHW Group Architects & Engineers of Greenbelt, MD, with supporting Civil Design by Whitney, Bailey, Cox, and Magnani Associates of Baltimore, MD. The facility falls under the Class E - Educational designation, with a planned student capacity of 1,200.
The structure itself is a two-story structural steel and cold form metal framed goliath, clad with a combination of attractive, exterior metal wall panels and brick veneer. The scope included state of the art fire alarm, sprinkler, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Because the building is situated within the center of a residential community, Dustin adhered to all respective noise operation levels, dust control measures, as well as county road maintenance leading to the site in efforts to keep the surrounding community pleased and satisfied with the project.
