Kensington Parkwood Elementary School

Location: Kensington, MD
Owner: Montgomery County Public Schools
Architect: Wiss, Janney & Elstner Associates
Delivery: Design/Bid/Build

Dustin Construction and GWWO Architects collaborated in order to deliver an all-new elementary school for Montgomery County Public Schools. The original school was outdated and undersized and therefore unable to support the vision of creating artistic learners by providing innovative learning opportunities.  A full demolition was required and a brand new school was to be built on the same site. Totaling 77,136 SF, Kensington Parkwood Elementary includes 23 teaching stations along with a 4,000 SF gymnasium and a 2,800 SF multipurpose room. The school’s capacity is now 518 students which serves kindergarten through fifth grade. An interesting feature of this school is the location of the mechanical rooms; most are situated on the roof in a penthouse to ensure more proper use of educational space. Dustin faced some challenges including tight physical space located in the middle of the neighborhood, but overcame these issues in order to produce an outstanding new school for children in the Kensington area.
