Dustin Construction in partnership with Winmar Construction worked in conjunction with Architecture, Inc. to design and construct this renovation and addition project for Brent Elementary School. As a Phase I Modernization, all classrooms were renovated over a short period of time—the summer. This program focuses on those aspects of the classroom that most impact the learning environment with a particular emphasis on enhanced lighting, acoustics, air quality, climate control, and technology. Receiving approval from council on June 26, 2009, Dustin/Winmar worked rapidly and efficiently in order to have the school ready for students and staff on August 15, 2009. What began as a classroom renovation quickly grew to incorporate the following: first floor classroom walls were pushed out to the roof line; the administration area was relocated to a 1900 SF addition on the front of the building; several roofs were replaced; a new, state-of-the-art playground and front brick paver entrance for the SIT team were installed. This project encountered many challenges including changes in scope and tight deadlines. The SIT and administrative teams collaborated closely with Dustin/Winmar to guarantee a quality establishment that proudly preserves the integrity of the magnet programs. Today, Brent Elementary School boasts state of the art technology with LCD Monitors, sound reinforcement systems, multiple data drops and Interactive white board hook-ups in every classroom, certifying authentic learning opportunities for students. With new lights in all of the classrooms and corridors, the lighting quality was improved dramatically, providing an inviting and positive school climate. The DCPS standard is 50 light candles per classrooms; after metering several locations, Dustin/Winmar was able to achieve over 100 foot candles in the classrooms and 80 in the corridors. Every classroom received new furnishings including desks, student and teacher chairs, computer tables, cubbies, rugs and various other items to further confirm that Brent Elementary takes pride in both the aesthetics and academics of their school.
